Location:Elkins Park, Pennsylvania

Given its small space, the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network - Moss Rehab Courtyard at Elkins Park had a rather extensive program. The Hospital envisioned a courtyard that not only created pleasing views and accommodated outdoor staff breaks, but also served as an outdoor arena to facilitate extensive physical and emotional rehabilitation for patients in a space that was once overflowing with weeds and dirt.

McCloskey and Faber coordinated closely with staff and users to determine the most effective solution for such an extensive scope. M&F provided detailed concept plans and construction drawings for the new courtyard. As part of the services, M&F prepared hardscape plans, landscape plans, lighting plans, furniture and site furnishings selections, prepared specifications, managed the bid process and contractor selection, as well as provided construction administration.

The courtyard includes a mix of ground textures, a basketball hoop, and removable volleyball nets for physical rehabilitation. Additionally, the space has a custom cedar trellis, several covered shelters, custom planters for patient "Garden Therapy", and a fountain for various relaxing activities. Rain barrels collect water runoff from adjacent roofs and provide water for the raised planters and curbed planting beds.
